Moderator Kira Alin is transident. Now the 43-year-old remembers her childhood.

At birth, presenter Kira Alin was assigned male gender. “Fortunately, I realized early on that this wasn’t right and had it corrected in my teenage years,” the 43-year-old writes on her homepage. She deals with the topic very openly and now speaks about her past and experiences in an interview with the “Bild” newspaper.

“It started early on that I always liked to play with Barbies. But never at home with my parents, I didn’t dare do that, but always with my friends,” she reports. Kira Alin was born in Emmerich am Rhein and grew up in Hanover with seven siblings; her parents come from Turkey.

As a teenager, Kira Alin became increasingly unhappy and finally told her parents that she no longer wanted to be a boy. She was 14 years old at the time. “For me, puberty was much worse than for other teenagers back then because I didn’t want to get any hair on my legs. I much preferred the breasts that my friends got and I fell in love with boys,” she says.

“I’ve always been a woman”

A year later, she began hormone therapy to stop her puberty, followed by estrogen therapy. “From then on, I basically went through female puberty. I immediately felt that it was the right path for me. I’ve always been a woman, I just didn’t look like one at the beginning.”

Three years later she had gender reassignment surgery. “Nowadays everything works so well that there is absolutely no difference between it and an originally female body. And the magic is that the moment all this is done, the body transforms the skin and even the mucous membrane in such a way that that everything works and reacts like other women. Breast formation and even fat transfer are automatically adapted to a biological woman.

“Crazy, that can’t be right!”

However, her trans identity put small obstacles in Kira Alin’s path when she wanted to become a journalist. She applied for a traineeship at a television station. Because she openly admitted that she was transgender, she was rejected. “I just thought: Terrible, that can’t be true!” said the 43-year-old. Then in 2010 she got a chance at ProSiebenSat.1 Media AG for the magazine “taff” and got a job as a trainee. This began her career in the industry, followed by jobs at ProSieben, RTL and Sat.1.

Kira Alin sees her career as an important role model: “I now see that it’s good for other people to see: Kira, a transident woman, is fully living life. She has a completely normal everyday life and can work a normal job,” she explains . Their message is: “We are not a fringe group, not birds of paradise or exotics. We can and want to live completely normally, without being looked at or disadvantaged.”
