The United States has confirmed that five units linked to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) committed “individual incidents of serious human rights violations” against Palestinian citizens in the West Bank before the Hamas attack on October 7. Four of the battalions have adopted “corrective measures” that remove the possibility of US sanctions, and there are ongoing consultations with the Israeli Government about the fifth, according to State Department spokesman Vedant Patel.
“After a careful process, we found five Israeli battalions responsible for incidents that were serious violations of human rights,” stressed Patel, who did not want to identify the units or say what measures the Israeli Government had taken against them. According to the spokesperson, these incidents took place before the death of nearly 1,200 people in the Hamas terrorist attack.
The media have pointed out as the author of these abuses against Palestinian civilians Netzah Yehuda, a battalion of the Israeli Army made up of ultra-Orthodox Jews on which the Joe Biden Biden Administration is considering imposing sanctions. US law prohibits the federal government from funding or arming foreign security forces against whom there are credible allegations of human rights violations.
