(ANSA) – BRUSSELS, APR 29 – Unanimous green light for the revision of the ‘breakfast directive’, the set of EU rules on the composition, sales denomination, labeling and packaging of some food products commonly used in the morning, like honey or jam. The EU member states validated from Luxembourg – during the EU Agriculture Council – the agreement reached with the European Chamber on the new rules. The most important chapter of the revision concerns honey, in particular on the labeling of the country of origin and the traceability system: the new rules will combat imports of adulterated honey from non-EU countries by introducing a mandatory and clearly visible label of the country of origin, and will initiate a process to create a product traceability system. In the case of blends, the label will also include the percentage that each country represents and clearer labeling on the sugar content in fruit juices and the minimum fruit content in jams will also be introduced.
