Ukrainian President Ukraine“>Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly announced a tough fight against corruption and waste of funds in the state apparatus. Evidence of the success of this struggle is, among other things, a condition for Ukraine’s EU membership. A few days ago, the Minister of Agriculture Mykola Solskys handed in a resignation request due to corruption charges. Ukraine’s anti-corruption office accuses him of misappropriating state land worth millions.
Speaking about the relationship with V. Zelensky, V. Klychko regretted in the interview that the leading politicians in Ukraine lack unity. “Unfortunately, at this time of war, there is no unity among the political forces,” he said. When asked if he finally met with V. Zelensky to diffuse the tension between the two, V. Klyčko said that he had tried to do this many times since the beginning of the war, because a lot depends on the capital. “But, unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to personally meet with V. Zelensky. He probably has other things to do,” said V. Klyčko.
The mayor of Kyiv noted that in the current situation it is important to forget about political ambitions. “It is stupidity to compete politically in such a situation,” he said. In early December, V. Klychko unusually clearly accused V. Zelensky of mistakes.
During the conversation with journalists, V. Klyčko drew attention to the damage caused by Russian drones and demanded greater international support in the field of air defense. “We lack air defense systems,” he said. Residents of Odesa, Dnipro and Kharkiv also need good protection.
After two years of war, the damage to Kyiv is immense. Over 800 buildings were damaged or destroyed during the air attacks, including almost 440 residential houses. The attacks killed more than 200 people, including seven children. According to V. Klyčko, the behavior was particularly cynical in the winter of 2022/2023, when Russian forces tried to destroy the city’s critical infrastructure. “This is genocide. It is a terror to leave the largest city in Eastern Europe without water, electricity and heating,” said the mayor of the Ukrainian capital.
