On Monday, the politician submitted a request to the Central Election Commission (CEC) requesting the cancellation of his mandate. CEC press representative Indrė Ramanavičienė confirmed this to Elta.
“Monday, April 29, 9:37 a.m. The Supreme Election Commission received by e-mail the statement of Seimas member Remigijaus Žemaitaitis regarding his resignation as a member of the Seimas”, I. Ramanavičienė stated in a written comment to Elta.
“The issue of the termination of the powers of a Seimas member before the deadline will be included in the agenda of the next commission meeting,” she added.
The next CEC meeting is scheduled for Thursday.
ELTA reminds that on Thursday the Supreme Court found that Seimas member R. Žemaitaitis broke the Seimas member’s oath with anti-Semitic statements and grossly violated the Constitution.
After the court’s verdict, the parliament should make decisions regarding the cancellation of the mandate of R. Žemaitaitis as a member of the Seimas – if he is removed from the Seimas by impeachment, the politician would not be able to run for elected positions for 10 years. However, R. Žemaitaitis said that he would resign from the Seimas himself.
Last year, R. Žemaitaitis published anti-Semitic, national discord-inciting posts on the Facebook social network and public information tools – the Seimas commission, which considered the issue of impeachment, believed that with such actions the politician possibly broke the oath of the Seimas member and grossly violated the Constitution.
The General Prosecutor’s Office has started a pre-trial investigation into the MP’s anti-Semitic statements.
As the Seimas statute provides, if the parliamentarians decide that there is a basis for the impeachment of a politician, the Seimas must apply to the Constitutional Court to assess whether the Constitution has been violated and the oath taken has been broken. If the Supreme Court finds that the oath was broken, the mandate of a member of the Seimas can be revoked if 85 members of the Seimas vote in favor.
