Yesterday, the work of the Arab Labor Conference in its fiftieth session was launched in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, with the participation of the Minister of Labor and Rehabilitation in the National Unity Government, Ali Al-Abed, and a large Arab and international presence.
During his speech at the opening session of the conference, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani strongly condemned the Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip and the denial of food, medicine, and safe housing to its people, calling on the international community to play its role in stopping this aggression, which violated all international laws and norms.
Al-Sudani explained that the Arab Labor Conference bears additional responsibilities that require building a qualitative relationship between educational outcomes and the needs of the labor market, expressing his aspiration to build modern labor institutions in Arab countries, providing a labor market for all who are capable of it and achieving a qualitative leap in performance, legislation, oversight and occupational safety.
Al-Sudani called for the need to attract women to work, as they are a productive energy that cannot be disrupted, and to limit child labour, pointing out the importance of adopting new production methods and raising the level of workers and institutions, creativity, innovation and cooperation with modern technology.
For his part, Najm Al-Aqabi, spokesman for the fiftieth session of the conference, confirmed that the session, which will continue until the fourth of next May, will discuss vital issues that directly affect labor markets and workers’ issues in the Arab world.
Al-Aqabi explained that the session will highlight the organization’s efforts to support member states to confront economic and social challenges, through various implemented activities that take into account geographical distribution and diversity.
Gilbert Hongbo, Director-General of the International Labor Organization, confirmed during the opening of the conference that developments in the Gaza Strip led to instability of the economic situation in Palestine.
For his part, Fayez Ali Al-Mutairi, Director General of the Arab Labor Organization, said that what is happening in Gaza is a genocidal war, noting that the organization since its inception has been supportive of the Palestinian cause and everyone must renew their commitment to defending the cause.
