(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 30 – Out of 100 people with disabilities between the ages of 15 and 64, only 32.5% are employed, compared to 58.9% of the entire population. 20% are looking for work.
“This is Istat‘s sad picture of the employment of people with disabilities – recalls Fish-Italian Federation of Overcoming Handicap – The numbers are even more merciless when compared with the EU average, which is over 50%. The public system employment agency is unable to achieve more than 20/30 thousand placements per year, an even more disadvantageous condition if we also consider gender inequality. Women with disabilities are subject to even more pronounced discrimination in the world of work, both compared to men with disability, and compared to other women”.
“It is painful to note once again, especially on the occasion of Labor Day – states Fish president Vincenzo Falabella – the profound exclusion that people with disabilities experience. Too often they are forced to search for work unsuccessfully or suffer less fair treatment.
Work is essential to promote inclusion and a full and dignified life. It is urgent to intervene and change those employment policies which currently do not allow people with disabilities to access them. The issue of work must become a priority of this Government also in consideration of the approval of the enabling law on disability.
Tomorrow is our Republic Day because the founding fathers based the constitution on work. We will continue to forcefully reiterate it.” (ANSA).
