“The commission assumed the role of prosecutors, without having any constitutional and legal powers, was created incorrectly, used methods in its activities that are incompatible with the methods of a democratic society, and even raised doubts about the activities of various services that are very important for the security of Lithuania. Basically, there was only one goal – to try to discredit the candidate, who is not liked by some political forces,” G. Nausėda told reporters in Gargždaii on Tuesday.
“To sum it up, I can only say this – you won’t go far with an empty tank,” the country’s leader added a vivid metaphor.
ELTA reminds that on Tuesday the Ethics and Procedures Commission of the Seimas concluded that the parliamentary commission that investigated the story of the VSD reporter exceeded its powers and illegally disclosed the identity of the reporter Tomas Gailius. In addition, the chairman of the commission, Vytautas Bakas, was biased and interested in the investigation, according to ethics watchdogs.
The VSD itself, the General Prosecutor’s Office and the Special Investigations Service (STT) appealed to the Seimas ethics watchdogs regarding possible violations of the parliamentary investigation. The commission also received Jarek Niewierowicz, the chief adviser to the president – it was decided to open another investigation on this basis.
For their part, the parliamentarians belonging to the opposition have turned to the Constitutional Court (CT), asking to find out whether the parliamentary investigation commission acted legally.
As reported earlier, a week ago the Seimas approved the conclusions of the parliamentary investigation after a discussion – the last vote remained for their approval. The conclusions of the VSD rapporteur’s commission cast a shadow over President Gitanas Nausėda and the heads of special services. After several months of analysis and the testimony of a dozen officials, it was established that the head of the Security Service, Darius Jauniškis, helped the then candidate G. Nausėda by collecting intelligence information about his environment. The conclusions of the investigation also state that the VSD investigated possible violations in the financing of G. Nausėda’s election campaign.
It was also found out that G. Nausėda and members of his electoral staff in 2018-2019 maintained contacts with representatives of the Belarusian fertilizer business, met with them, and after becoming the head of the country, invited these persons to the events held in the Presidency.
Meanwhile, the head of the Special Investigation Service (STT), Linas Pernavas, according to the commission, abused his duties by refusing to provide the information collected during the criminal intelligence investigation and misleading the commission members.
