Law enforcement officers returned fire, and the body of at least one suspect was later found on the property surrounding the shooting, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.
The incident lasted for about three hours.
Law enforcement officers were shot when they arrived to arrest a convicted felon wanted for possession of firearms, Police Chief Johnny Jennings said.
The law enforcement officers returned fire and hit one person, as it turned out later, killing him. Also after that, shots were fired from the house in the direction of the police, Jennings recounted the course of events.
After the shooting, law enforcement officers found two people in the building who were taken to the police station as persons of operational interest, he added.
The incident is “an absolutely tragic day for the city of Charlotte and the law enforcement profession,” Jennings said.
President Joe Biden has been informed about the incident.
The president “expressed his condolences and support to the community,” the White House said.
