In the footsteps of the first wish, hundreds of Ioannitians walked on the evening of Holy Monday, with the city of Ioannina participating for the first time in the annual Make-A-Wish (Make-A-Wish) Greece Walk for Wishes, which took place in 14 more cities of Greece on April 29, World Wish Day.
The walk in Ioannina took place on the initiative of Eugenia Disiou, mother of a child whose wish has been fulfilled by the organization, and with the valuable cooperation of the Municipality of Ioannito. Crowds of people gathered in Mavili Square and walked the steps of the first wish, holding special battery-powered lanterns, which were sold in the previous days to raise money to make other children’s wishes come true. Led by the families themselves and the wish children, the walk ended at the City Hall illuminated in the blue color of World Wish Day, while, as in all cities, so in Ioannina, in honor of the first child wish, Chris Greicius, two uniformed police officers accompanied the families throughout the walk. The event culminated with the wish kids, wearing their #Wishkids hat, symbolically releasing balloons into the sky.
At the same time, more than 80 municipalities across Greece lit up some landmark of their city in blue. One of them was the Municipality of Northern Tzoumerka, which lit up the Town Hall in Pramanta, symbolizing the participation of the Municipality in the international Make-A-Wish initiative, which makes wishes come true for children with serious and rare diseases.
Illuminations and walks “lit up” the entire sky on April 29 in the blue colors of the organization, honoring all the children who fought a serious illness and got well, or who are still fighting, but also the memory of those who lit our way.
April 29th has been established as World Wishing Day. It is the 44th anniversary of the fulfillment of the first wish of a seriously ill child, little Chris, in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1980. The day is celebrated in 50 countries around the world with various actions, lighting important monuments in shades of blue and spreading the vision of the organization.
