Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, said that the country is ready to hold general presidential elections before the end of the year, provided that the international community encourages this step.

Saleh added in an interview with Al-Sharq newspaper on the sidelines of the Arab Parliament meeting in Cairo that the constitutional rule and the law for electing the president and parliament are ready, along with the readiness of the Election Commission and the mechanism for electing the president.

Saleh considered that the entitlement procedure requires the formation of a unified government, not the existence of two governments in the east and the west, revealing communication with the State Council to reach an agreement on the mechanism for its formation.

Saleh confirmed that the two chambers agreed in principle that the candidate would be recommended by obtaining 20 recommendations from members of the State Council compared to 10 from the representatives, and he would advance with those who obtained the same conditions to Parliament, and based on the program presented by the candidate, he would choose someone who gave him confidence to be tasked with forming the government.

Saif Gaddafi ran for election

Commenting on Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s candidacy, Saleh stressed that every person who meets the conditions can nominate, but nomination by name, position, or affiliation does not exist, according to him.

Saleh explained that the laws were made in Libya for everyone, no exclusion or marginalization of anyone, and therefore anyone can complain about them, and everyone who can stand for elections can nominate himself, and the Libyan people have the say in the end.

Saleh pointed out that the foreign “Western countries” listen to those who do not want a solution and rely on them in decisions, ignoring the overwhelming majority of Libyans who want elections and want one authority, and that most of those present on the current scene do not want elections.

Arab positions and foreign interventions

In his interview, Saleh criticized foreign interference, which he saw as the reason for the delay in resolving the Libyan crisis, and expressed reservations about the role of the international community and its inability to choose envoys capable of resolving the Libyan crisis, saying: If the matter had been left in the hands of the Libyans to implement the constitutional declaration and the political agreement, things would have proceeded quickly.

Aguila commented on the resignation of the UN envoy Abdullah Batili, saying that he did not provide any proposal, support, or expertise to the Libyans wishing to hold elections, noting that external interference and the sending of people who have no connection to the Libyan reality and the composition of the people delayed the solution to the crisis.

Saleh also considered that the Arab position on the Libyan crisis was not at the level with the exception of some countries, attributing the reasons for this to economic and political responsibilities or problems, adding that the intervention of Arab countries in the Libyan issue would have settled matters a while ago.

Saleh stated that the Arab position must be clear and listen to all parties, adding that the world recognizes the House of Representatives as the legitimate and elected representative, and no government can gain confidence except through it, he said.
