The Olympic flame, a symbol of peace and unity, embarks on a historic journey across the Mediterranean Sea towards its final destination in Paris. For the first time in the history of the modern Olympic Games, the sacred fire leaves Greece aboard the legendary sailing ship ‘Belem’, inaugurating a new era in the transport of the Olympic torch.
Built in 1896, the ‘Belem’, a majestic three-masted sailing ship, becomes the vehicle chosen to carry the Olympic spirit from its place of origin to the land that will host the Olympic Games.
Setting sail from the port of Piraeus marks the beginning of this historic voyage, heading towards Marseille, where its arrival is expected on May 8.
From Marseille, the ‘Belem’ sailboat will undertake its last journey, sailing through the waters of the Mediterranean towards Paris.
On July 26, during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the cauldron will be lit with the fire that has traveled across the sea, uniting athletes and spectators in the celebration of sporting spirit and excellence.
