On this May 1st, journalists need to remember that they are also workers

When I see some journalistic coverage of protests and strikes or the union debate, I wonder how we, who cannot recognize ourselves as the working class, can understand the demands of workers. The fact is that we are not external observers and nor can we be. We are part of this social fabric, we perform a function, we are part of the gear, whether we like it or not.

Many do not ask themselves where the readjustment comes from. Like a child who thinks that milk comes from the market, we think that the adjustment comes out of nowhere, without being the result of much dialogue between capital and labor. Isn’t it ironic that the professionals who report on and analyze democracy on a daily basis do not exercise their “professional citizenship”?

The life of a journalist, leaving aside the false glamour, is not easy. Even more so for those who are their own bosses not because of their own decision to undertake and create a vehicle or consultancy, for example, but because they were pushed into it.

I will not discuss the reasons that lead to the dismissal of professional colleagues — the reasons range from the fair need for survival of the outlet itself (doing good journalism is expensive, even more so at a time when the journalism business model is in crisis and that Many readers think that poor management is not worth paying for information. No journalism entrepreneur likes to fire people, because workforce generates wealth. Not to be frivolous, the problems of each company or organization need to be analyzed on a case-by-case basis.

The question is how the journalist behaves given the nature of his work.

I have already brought these arguments here previously, but I thought it would be worth revisiting them. In recent years, we have seen in São Paulo, Brasília and other cities mobilizations of journalists for adjustments that, at least, compensate for the inflation or bring any real gain. There was engagement of young reporters and important victories. This reminds us that recognizing yourself as a worker, mobilizing and demanding still works.
