The US Senate approved a bill banning the import of enriched uranium from Russia.
The US Senate approved the bill in a unanimous vote over the bill that had previously been approved by the House of Representatives.
The ban will continue until the end of 2040. According to data from the Energy Information Administration of the US Department of Energy, America imports most of the uranium used to operate power plants, and Russia accounts for about 12% of the supplies.
The law allows the ban to be lifted if there are no other sources of uranium to support the operation of nuclear reactors, and the US Department of Energy, in consultation with the Secretaries of State and Treasury, may issue a permit to import it.
It is noteworthy that prices in the global uranium market rose sharply after the United States announced its intention to abandon uranium supplies from Russia.
Last March, reports from the Russian company “Atom Energoprom” indicated that “Rosatom” had prepared preventive measures to reduce the damage that could be caused to it and to buyers of Russian uranium.
