A new type of dinosaur egg was discovered in Laiyang, East China’s Shandong province, the Global Times reports. The discovery not only enriched the genus of dinosaur eggs in Laiyang, but also provided a more comprehensive basis for further research on the evolution of species during the Cretaceous period, Radio China reported.

The new discovery can be traced back to 2019, when a group of researchers discovered a nest of fossilized dinosaur eggs in Laiyang during an international field science expedition. After conducting excavations, the research team discovered that the deformation of these dinosaur eggs is extremely rare compared to known fossils of other dinosaur eggs.

Through collaborative research, the newly discovered nest of dinosaur egg fossils has been confirmed to be a brand new type of egg. Based on their findings, the researchers hypothesized that the nest probably belonged to a hadrosaur, which is thought to have lived in the middle of the Late Cretaceous period.

To date, scientists have thoroughly explored numerous fossil sites in Laiyang and have discovered and collected a collection of 12 types of dinosaur fossils, spanning nine genera and five categories. In addition, they found 13 species of dinosaur egg fossils from five families and six genera.
