Milo J can make history as the biggest winner in an edition of the Gardel Awards, since it has 15 nominations. The 17-year-old ragpicker heads the list of candidates for the most important recognitions granted by the Argentine music industry, followed by the Latin urban pop singer Emilia Mernes (he’s 12) and the pop star Lali Esposito (7). The three are part of the most important category of the award, the Gardel de Oro, along with Miranda! Fito Páez y David Lebon. This was announced this Tuesday, April 30, by the Argentine Chamber of Phonogram and Videogram Producers (CAPIF)the event’s organizing entity, during a broadcast through the Gardels’ YouTube channel in which it revealed the candidates and categories that will be part of this 26th edition.
The presentation of the nominees was done through a recording previously made in the Movistar Arenaplace where the gala will be held next May 28. The hosts Fede Bareiro, Ceci Mendez, Guille Gilabert and Cris Vanadía presented the fifty shortlists that will give life to this edition. The ceremony can be seen live through Star and the Star+ platform. Continuing with a trend that was consolidated in the last editions of the Gardel Awards, Urban and pop artists, representatives of a new generation, are the ones with the largest number of nominations in different categories. In addition to Milo J and Emilia, this is the case of Bizarrap, Nicki Nicole, María Becerra, Big One, Tini, Duki and Evlay.
The only category voted for by the public through social networks, Song of the Year, this time alternating with Trueno (“Tranky funky”); Emilia and Tini (“The original.mp3”); Nicki Nicole and Milo J (“Shoot***”); María Becerra (“Empty Heart”); He Killed a Motorized Policeman (“Gold Medal”); Luck Ra and BM (“La morocha”); Bizarrap and Shakira (“Shakira: Bzrp music sessions, vol. 53”); Lali (“Obsesión”); Lit Killah, Duki, Emilia, Tiago PZK, FMK, Rusherking, María Becerra and Big One (“Los del Espacio”); Evlay, Wos and Santiago Motorizado (“Investido”). Collaboration Bizarrap and Shakira, and Emilia and Tini repeat; and completed by Luck Ra and Abel Pintos (“May I Miss Everything”), and Miranda!, María Becerra and FMS (“Perfecta”, 2003 version).
In Short Video Clip Competing are Facundo Ballve (“La original.mp3”, by Emilia and Tini), Andrés Capasso (“Wave of suicides”, by Dillom), El Dorado and Facundo Voncoptel (“Fuck el Police Remix”, by Trueno and Cypress Hill), and Lali (she directed “Who are they?” herself). Minutes before the most popular awards were defined, the categories dedicated to urban and pop music were presented at the beginning of the streaming. And to further complicate the musical trends in competition, in the Best Urban Pop Artist Album compete Acoustic Sessionby María Becerra; Cupidde Tini; Mp3, by Emilia; and Romance mixtape 2, by Lara91k. In the category Producer of the Year there are Mauro De Tommaso, Dano, Jean Luka and Lex Luthorz (Forget it); Santiago Ruiz (Almaby Nicki Nicole), Facundo Yalve (111, by Milo J); Escalandrum and Esteban Sehinkman (Escalectric, from Escalandrum); and Fito Paez, Diego Olivero and Gustavo Borner were in charge of Eadda9223. Miranda Hotel! completes the category with its ten producers.
Best New Artist It is one of the most robust categories, since it houses 13 groups and soloists from dissimilar musical genres. Highlights include Evlay, Milo J, Winona Riders, Tomi Lago, Mujer Zebra, BB Asul and Barro. In Best Alternative Rock Album There is Zebra Woman, Winona Riders, You Point It Out, Barbi Recanati and (the surprise, the rag man) Neo Pistea, thanks to his album Neo. For its part, in Best Rock Group AlbumGardel will be among Song kills algorithmEverything Appears Normal; Who knows?, from Grandfather’s Pastillas; either super horror, from He Killed a Motorized Policeman. AND Best Rock Artistin between Carcaseby Carca; Eadda9223, by Fito Páez; and Lebon Heritage, by David Lebón. Miranda! became a candidate to make history in this award ceremony, after adding the category of Best Pop Group Albumwhere Turf and De La Rivera are also located.
In the jazz segment, Best Jazz Album has Escalandrum, Juan “Pollo” Raffo and Roxana Amed. He also highlights Best Author Song, with Santi Celli, Sol Basa, Lisandro Aristimuño and Duratierra. The category Best Folklore Artist brings together Teresa Parodi, Soledad, Maggie Cullen, José Luis Aguirre and Marcelo Dellamea. Another surprise is the inclusion of Mercedes Sosa in this edition of the Gardel, although this time she does it in Best Concept Albumnext to Milo J and Liliana Herrero.
At the end of the broadcast, the four hosts presented the most important category, the Gardel de Oro. There, Miranda! compete with your disk Miranda Hotel!; Emilia Mernes with Mp3; Lali Espósito with Forget itand the trapper Milo J with his debut 111. Although this troupe is ranked as a favorite to win the top statuette, the blow could come from David Lebón in this case, starting in the second part of Lebon Heritage, with which he revisits his invaluable work; and Fito Páez, who reinvented in EADDA9223 the repertoire of The love after Love.
