Donald Trump applauds police for evicting pro-Palestinian protesters from Columbia University
The former president of the United States and Republican candidate Donald Trump this Wednesday applauded the “great work” of the New York Police in evicting the pro-Palestinian protesters who had camped at Columbia University.
During a rally in Waukesha (Wisconsin), the New York magnate said that “New York was under assault” by students who denounced the US policy of supporting Israel in the Gaza war.
He accused Columbia University President Nemat Shafik of being “very weak” and “waiting too long” to act, but finally the police “did an incredible job” entering the building that had been occupied by several students.
“The police arrived and in two hours everything was over. It was beautiful to see,” said the Republican to applause from the public.
On Tuesday night, the authorities broke into the emblematic Hamilton Hall building (Columbia University), which hours before had been taken over by pro-Palestinian students.
The eviction operation at the facility, which was also occupied in 1968 in protest against the Vietnam War, resulted in the arrest of 282 protesters, as reported this Wednesday by the mayor of New York, Eric Adams.
Disinvestment in corporations linked to Israel’s war action in the Gaza Strip is a widespread demand that has mobilized university students across the country, where protests have expanded rapidly.
During the early hours of this Wednesday, the Los Angeles Police also intervened at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) to stop violent clashes between groups of pro-Israel protesters and those demanding to stop the war in Gaza.
After these confrontations, UCLA canceled all its classes this Wednesday.
