The Bulgarian participants in the Balkan Mathematics Olympiad in Varna won 8 medals, and over 200 are the awards for our country since its foundation in 1984. This became clear at this year’s award ceremony, which was opened by the Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Galin Tsokov. He presented the prizes to the winners, among whom are again Bulgarian students.

“I am proud that once again students from Bulgaria won medals in a contested competition with their peers from so many countries,” said the minister. He assured the Bulgarian youth that they have support from the state and reminded that the first, second and third place place, are entitled to a special one-year scholarship as gifted children. “All of you here are already winners and I’m sure you have a brilliant scientific career ahead of you. I wish you a lot of success, don’t stop dreaming, and with the talent you have, you will easily fulfill your every dream”, said the minister to all 137 participants from 22 countries in the 41st Balkaniad in mathematics.

From the first Bulgarian team, the gold medals were won by Marin Hristov (12th grade, SMG) and Deyan Hadji-Manich (12th grade, MG Varna). The silver medals go to Veselin Markovich (11th grade, MG Varna) and Andrey Stefanov (9th grade, PCMH), and the bronze goes to Alexander Bangachev (9th grade, PCMH). Viktor Kostadinov (12th grade, PCMH) received a certificate of honor. Their leaders are Dragomir Grozev and Alexander Ivanov.

In the second team, the bronze medals were won by Angel Hristov (11th grade, PPMG Burgas), Georgi Nikolov (10th grade, SMG) and Lazar Todorov (11th grade, SMG). The students who defend the Bulgarian tribagrenik at the Balkaniad are chosen among the best performers from the Autumn Mathematical Tournament, the National Winter Mathematical Competition and the Spring Mathematical Competition. Then they go through an additional selection with control competitions, where the best 6 enter the national team for the competition, and the next 6 ranked from 9 to 11 grades enter the second Bulgarian team.
