The launch of the first power unit at the Turkey's first nuclear power plant is witnessing a historic moment”>Akkuyu nuclear power plant being built by Russia in Turkey is planned within a year. This was announced by the head of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic Alparslan Bayraktar, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.
“Turkey and Russia are jointly implementing the Akkuyu nuclear power plant construction project. Work on the first reactor is almost 95% completed, I hope that we will begin producing electricity based on nuclear energy within a year,” the minister said, speaking at a conference in Istanbul.
Bayraktar previously reported that the commissioning of the first power unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant is scheduled for 2025, but Turkey is trying to move the deadline and launch it this year. Among the possible dates is October 29, when a national holiday is celebrated – Turkish Republic Day.
Akkuyu NPP is the first nuclear power plant in Turkey, which is being built by the Russian state corporation Rosatom. The Akkuyu project includes four power units with Russian-designed VVER generation III+ reactors. The capacity of each power unit will be 1,200 MW. According to the terms of the intergovernmental agreement, the commissioning of the first power unit of the nuclear power plant must take place within seven years after receipt of all permits. Taking into account the receipt of a license for the construction of the first power unit in 2018, this period falls on 2025.
