Speaking at the opening of the Parliamentary Conference on South-South Cooperation, organized by the House of Advisors under the high patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, Mr. Al-Assoumi affirmed the determination of the Arab Parliament to play a role effective in establishing institutional mechanisms to strengthen communication and dialogue between regional parliaments.

In this context, he pleaded for the coordination of positions and the rapprochement of points of view on issues which require permanent dialogue in order to lay the foundations of solidarity, stability and peace.

The transformations that the world is going through require greater solidarity between the countries of the South in order to make their voices heard and be able to protect their interests and their just causes, he insisted, believing that economic integration represents a point of ideal entry for strengthening political dialogue, given the similarities between the development, social and economic models of Arab and African countries and those of Latin America.

On this occasion, Mr. Al-Assoumi reiterated the Arab Parliament’s call for the launch of programs and projects with a regional dimension with the aim of achieving greater integration between Arab, African and Latin American countries.

This type of regional cooperation has become an urgent necessity to face many common challenges, including the fight against poverty, unemployment, the achievement of sustainable development, the development of education and health and the empowerment of women and young people, he assured.

The Parliamentary Conference on South-South Cooperation brings together more than 260 participants from 40 countries, including 30 presidents of national parliaments and regional and continental parliamentary unions from Africa, the Arab world, Latin America and the Caribbean.

This two-day conference addresses “the role of national parliaments and regional and continental parliamentary unions in Africa, the Arab world and Latin America in promoting strategic partnerships and achieving integration and common development.”

Organized at the initiative of the House of Advisors in collaboration with the Association of Senates, Shura and equivalent Councils of Africa and the Arab world and the South-South Dialogue Forum, this meeting is part of the support for the leadership of the Kingdom of Morocco, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in the launch of development and solidarity initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation with the countries of the South.
