Tackle things together, get started and see that things work – that is the idea behind the Capital of Culture. “Free Press” introduces people who are already living this. Today: Lotte Claudia Fischer from the “Baukultur für Chemnitz” association.

Who are you?

We are visionaries for our city. Our association is called “Baukultur für Chemnitz”. It emerged from the cultural capital working group of the Saxon Chamber of Architects.

What are you doing?

We want to make the undiscovered visible. For example, the focus is on inanimate places in the city and the question of how the quality of stay there can be improved. Passers-by were asked about this and temporary activities were organized last year on the Seeber and train station forecourts. We set up street furniture and mobile greenery and had a wind orchestra play. But the revitalization of Marienplatz is particularly important to us. We gave the area its name: It is an undeveloped, 20,000 square meter piece of land behind the authorities complex at Marx-Head, known as the Party Fold.

What bothers you in this world?

We can’t say that at all. We don’t wear negative glasses, we wear future glasses! Our motto: Everything that is already there is good, but it can become even better.

How do you want to change this world?

By focusing on what lies on our doorstep, in this case Marienplatz. We ask how the administrative complex can be broken up, the open space can be built on and the area up to the art collections and the Heck-Art restaurant can be better connected to the center. We think that an extraordinary building belongs on the site. Maybe Europe’s first Avatar Theater could be there? Or an experimental museum. The recently discussed idea of a large cultural and sports hall is also worth considering. We always say: We need an Elphi behind the party fold! So a building that has as much appeal as the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

What has been your biggest thing so far?

That with our light festival “Light our Vision” last September we turned this non-place into a light place. With large-scale projections on the facades and so-called video mapping, we made possible changes to this location visually tangible. We had tens of thousands of visitors who looked at it. That was great!

What are you planning to do next?

From September 25th to 28th this year there will be a new edition of “Light our Vision”, the “LOV 2.0”, which is intended to illustrate the potential of the areas.

The association “Baukultur für Chemnitz” was founded in March 2022, has ten members (mainly architects) and can be found on the internet. » lightourvision.de
