Serious threat to journalists in Sri Lanka!

In recent days, it has been observed that journalists in Sri Lanka continue to face serious threats.

In that regard, the last one week alone has seen the most serious investigations and attacks on three journalists.

Today, the house of Samuthitha Samarawickrema, a journalist from Southern Sri Lanka, was attacked.

Similarly, the secretary of the Batticaloa District Tamil Journalists Union and Selvakumar Nilanthan are again under serious investigation by the Eravur CID.

Journalist Punniamurthy Sasikaran, the treasurer of the Batticaloa District Tamil Journalists ‘Union and the liaison secretary of the Working Journalists’ Association, was similarly interrogated and a restraining order was issued against him based on information recently provided by the Batticaloa Police.

Thus the pressures on journalists and media companies in Sri Lanka continue.

Moreover, it is said that different kinds of threats are being made against the journalist by different parties for different reasons.

They have been subjected to various threats by the security forces under the guise of investigations on several occasions for exposing the facts against injustice.

There have also been allegations that no one has paid attention to the constant threats made by Tamil journalists in the Batticaloa district under the guise of investigations.

Affected journalists have reported that the Sinhala media and media organizations are less vocal when threats are made against Tamil journalists.
