In a massive package announced by the US Treasury Department on Wednesday, Washington targeted nearly 300 Russian, Chinese and other entities accused of supporting President Vladimir Putin’s invasion.
“China calls on the US to stop slandering and antagonizing China and stop recklessly implementing illegal and unilateral sanctions,” a foreign ministry spokesman told AFP news agency.
“China will take all necessary measures to resolutely defend the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises,” he added.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said her department has “repeatedly warned that companies will face significant consequences for providing material support to Russia’s war effort” and that it will continue to take “actions to disrupt and undermine Russia’s war effort.”
China has never condemned Russia’s attack on Ukraine and is accused of indirectly supporting the war through its strategic partnership with its neighbor Moscow.
On Thursday, Beijing reiterated that it “did not create and is not involved” in the Ukraine crisis and has the right to develop “normal” trade relations with all countries, including Russia. “China has always strongly objected to the US implementing illegal and unilateral sanctions against Chinese companies and applying ‘long-arm jurisdiction,'” a Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
