The current general director of the Carabineros is investigated by the Public Ministry for omissions in crimes linked to the social outbreak.

The Seventh Guarantee Court of Santiago rescheduled for next October 1 the formalization hearing of Ricardo Yáñez, general director of Carabineros, in addition to former generals Mario Rozas and Diego Olate.

The current general director of the Carabineros is investigated by the Public Ministry for omissions in crimes linked to the social outbreak.

In the first instance, the formalization of Ricardo Yáñez and the other former senior officers of the police institution would take place this May 7, but the National Prosecutor’s Office requested its rescheduling after the death of three police officers in Cañete.

“Formalization now does not help, it would be a factor of complexity, of difficulty for that institution that has to face this and that is in charge of the investigation. It would simply be very inopportune,” declared the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, at the time.

For his part, the national prosecutor Angel Valencia indicated that “it is not that the decision to formalize is nullified, but a new day and time is requested for the three defendants in the case, not only for General Yáñez.”

Along with this, the Judiciary decided that the process would remain in the hands of Minister Miguel Vásquez, after his counterpart Jorge Zepeda withdrew from processing the civil case and prejudicial measure filed by Ricardo Yáñez.
