Algeria affirmed that the time has come to lift the historical injustice inflicted on the Palestinian people and their occupied territories.

The head of the Permanent Mission of Algeria in New York, Ahmed Sahraoui, stated during the United Nations General Assembly meeting, to discuss the use of the “veto” by the United States of America in the Security Council against a draft resolution submitted by Algeria recommending that the General Assembly accept Palestine as a full member state in the United Nations, yesterday, Wednesday. “Algeria’s support for the Palestinians is dictated by the duty of brotherhood, its history, and its bitter struggle against colonialism.”

Sahraoui pointed out that “Algeria fully believes that Palestine’s natural status in this organization is a member like any other member of our General Assembly,” considering that Palestine’s request for membership in the United Nations is an expression of the Palestinians’ inalienable right to self-determination.

Sahrawi called on the members of the Security Council to listen to the voice of the international group and recommend Palestine’s membership in the United Nations, noting that “the Security Council, in accordance with Article 24 of the Charter, acts as a representative of the members of the United Nations, and therefore it is not right for the Commissioner to violate the wishes of the majority of the members, who are the ones with original jurisdiction.”

He pointed out that “the credibility of the United Nations and the international system is at stake, in light of the grave violations that we see daily in the occupied Palestinian territories.”

It is noteworthy that the General Assembly meeting came based on a procedure known as (the Veto Initiative) adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in April 2022, which authorizes it to meet automatically within ten days, after any of the five permanent members of the Security Council uses the veto, until… All UN member states are able to scrutinize and comment on the use of the veto.

On April 18, the Security Council failed to pass the draft resolution submitted by Algeria, on behalf of the Arab Group, which recommends that the United Nations General Assembly enable the State of Palestine to obtain its full membership in the United Nations, after the United States used its veto power. .
