The ideal cinema film is only half as long as the big Oscar winner “Oppenheimer”. This is the result of a recent survey from the USA. Yes, could it be that in the age of TikTok and Netflix, people are worried about their screen time?
What do the romantic comedy “A Rainy Day in New York,” the fantasy drama “A Ghost Story,” and the action biopic “Bronson” have in common? Firstly: All three of them were shown in the cinema. Second: None of the three apparently made film history. Third: All three are still perfect in one respect. With a running time of exactly 92 minutes, they are supposedly exactly the right length for a cinema film.
At least that’s what a recent survey of two thousand Americans found. The Americans are done with marathon films, reports the survey institute Talker Research, which contradicts the last Oscar rush: Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer”, their big winner, finally comes in at 180 minutes long twice the length and still won seven Oscars – so basically one every 25 minutes.

Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” (quite often left empty-handed at the awards, but nominated ten times) is an incredible 206 minutes long, which corresponds to 772.5 TikTok videos with the ideal duration of 16 seconds, on the one hand but wouldn’t even be enough for five episodes of “Breaking Bad”, for which an experienced binger doesn’t even need a rainy day.
Wait a minute: We live in the age of TikTok and Netflix and people think 93 minutes of film is one too many?
In fact, it doesn’t seem to be the excessive flickering that bothers those surveyed; rather, it seems to be bothering the cinema itself, in which there is neither a sofa to lounge on, a refrigerator to run to, nor a button to pause. A full 15 percent of them even find cinema performances that last longer than two hours unreasonable. Maybe because the glowing second screen is forbidden in the dark hall and pushes one of 675 TikTok videos every “Oppenheimer” minute?
