Borussia Dortmund presented a disciplined performance against its guest, Paris Saint-Germain, who had expectations in their favour, and beat the French champions 1-0 in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final last night, but Dortmund coach Edin Terzic says that the return match in the French capital will take place next week. The next one will be more difficult.
The club, which belongs to the Ruhr Valley, scored the winning goal in the 36th minute through its player Niklas Volkrug, to achieve a slight advantage before the return match in the French capital, next Tuesday.
Coach Terzic said in a press conference: “We played a very good match and achieved a victory by a small margin, but a well-deserved victory. Our team gave a great collective performance, which led us to victory.” We wanted this small advantage and we know that the return match next week will likely be more difficult than today’s match.”
Terzic added: “This is only the first half and next week’s match will be a different story.” “It will be difficult to face their performance in front of their fans, and we felt this today from the 45th minute until the 60th minute.”
The French capital team’s performance improved after the break, hitting the woodwork twice in the 51st minute and wasting a number of opportunities.
Terzic said: “We felt the quality of the French team. We gave our best performance against Saint-Germain, but next week he will receive tremendous support from his fans and will seek to overturn the result.”
But Dortmund actually achieved something big in the first leg, ensuring that Germany obtained an additional place in the Champions League next season, and perhaps it itself will be the biggest beneficiary of this achievement.
Dortmund currently occupies fifth place among the German League teams, three rounds before the end of the season.
Regarding this, Terzic said: “We wanted to qualify for the Champions League through the German League and not this way, but qualifying based on obtaining fifth place also partly comes because of our success.”
