Four people from a mountaineering team were killed on Friday in Sulaymaniyah, in northern Iraq, as a result of floods resulting from heavy rains, according to local officials.

Raouf Kamal, mayor of the Qardag region (40 kilometers south of Sulaymaniyah), told Agence France-Presse: “Four people from a mountaineering team consisting of 12 people drowned in the village of Oasbi” in Qardag.

Aram Ali, civil defense spokesman in Sulaymaniyah, confirmed the toll, saying that 8 other climbers survived the accident in southern Sulaymaniyah, the second city in the autonomous Kurdistan region. He pointed out that a warning was issued yesterday stating that the weather is not suitable, and it is not permissible to travel to these places, especially mountain climbing teams.

The unusual heavy rains caused floods in several areas of Iraq, especially in the north, where some roads were closed in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region.

The spokesman for the Iraqi Weather Authority, Amer Al-Jabri, told Agence France-Presse that the rains are supposed to begin in the country at the end of December and continue until the end of March.

He pointed out that “the percentage of rain that fell on the country this year is better than last year.”
