/ The Archbishop of the Vatican, Bangalore, Peter Machado, announced on Tuesday that the “Kannada” language has been added to the list of languages through which he communicates through his official website.

“News related to the Pope, the Vatican, the universal Church and the world will be of great interest to the local Church,” Machado said while announcing the addition of this language to the official Vatican News website.

The Kannada language is also scheduled to be used on Vatican Radio, according to the same sources.

Archbishop Machado thanked Pope Francis for his continued efforts in “transporting the Church to remote areas.”

The latest population statistics indicate that more than 2% of India’s population, which numbers about 1.4 billion people, are Christians, and most of them follow Catholicism. Hinduism constitutes the main religion for most Indians, about 80%, followed by Islam.

The Vatican News website is the official news agency of the Holy See, and its main language is Italian.

Other non-European languages into which the Vatican website translates its articles include Mongolian, Malayalam, Swahili, and Amharic.

The addition of the “Kannada” language – also known as Kannara, which is spoken by about 40 million people in the state of Karnataka in southern India and neighboring regions – represents an opportunity for the Catholic Church to improve communication with its followers in this region, which is witnessing a large spread of the Catholic religion.
