The custom of the Botides in Corfu
In Corfu, Holy Saturday is identified with the “Botis”, i.e. the throwing of clay containers filled with water from the balconies of the homes of the people of Corfu.
Many thousands of visitors have flooded the island and witnessed the custom.
In fact, this visit was reinforced this morning with four cruise ships that approached the port of Corfu, carrying around 10,000 passengers and increasing the number of visitors even more.
There were thousands of believers from all over Greece who saw the custom of the “Botides” in Spianada Square. At exactly 11 o’clock the “Boots” are thrown when the bells of Agios Spyridon are ringing, right after the Metropolitan’s phrase “The Lord of the Lilies of the Earth is Risen”.
Many Corfu residents and visitors throw these red clay vessels from their windows and balconies, which symbolize the knock with which the Lord exits Hades and the rule of life over death.
