Germany‘s Ambassador to Libya, Michael Unmacht, said that there is no alternative to elections in Libya, stressing the importance of the need for international and Libyan efforts to facilitate their holding.
Unmacht added, in a special interview on the Libya Al-Ahrar channel, that the role of the international community is always to support Libyan initiatives, explaining that without this support there will be no progress in the political process, according to him.
Unmacht pointed out that no country or political faction can prevent the elections if there is a strong Libyan alliance, pointing out that the international situation in 2019-2020 was worse than it is now, and that freezing the political situation is not in anyone’s interest, he said.
Enmacht explained that the political situation was rapidly advancing in 2021 during the Berlin tracks, the Geneva Conference, and other meetings, indicating the connection between the security, economic, and political tracks and the arrival of very strong laws in them, and the lack of will to achieve elections among the decision-makers prevented them from being implemented, according to what he said.
The German ambassador pointed out that the gradual opening of the German embassy in Tripoli in 2021, which came after the Second Berlin Conference, and its full opening in 2023, is evidence of progress in Libya and the confidence of diplomats from various countries in the stability of the situation, according to him.
The German ambassador called on international actors to examine the reasons for the failure to hold elections in December 2021, indicating that the responsibility is great for the international community, and that it is necessary to increase meetings between representatives of the Libyan parties in the various fields to resolve the outstanding problems, according to him.
Unmacht also pointed out that the division in Libya prevents any economic development or growth, stressing the necessity of finding one government that controls the entire country, and in order to achieve the goal of producing 3 million barrels, political progress must be achieved, as he put it.
Unmacht also stressed the importance of distributing wealth throughout Libya, and the existence of a committee that supervises this in accordance with the Supreme Financial Committee that was previously established, according to him.
Unmacht pointed out that 70% of the Libyan problem is internal, pointing out that the division in Libya is political and not popular or social, and that there is no sensitivity or hatred among the Libyans, citing the solidarity of the Libyans in the Derna tragedy, and their positive response and solidarity, east and west, with the disaster, which confirms that One people, and the opportunity was not exploited, he said.
The German ambassador stressed that the interest of all international players is in the stability of Libya, pointing out that the European Union was not united in previous years, and that it cannot play a role without unity and will within the union, pointing out that there is now will and clarity in many files, including the security and immigration file. And human rights in Libya, renewable energy files, and European-Libyan cooperation, according to him.
