Good news for motorists, as the weekend of the ascent approaches, which promises to be busy on the roads of France. The price of fuel at the pump continued to fall last week, with diesel reaching its lowest level since January, according to figures from the Ministry of Energy Transition.

Diesel sold on Friday for 1.7399 euros per liter on average, or 1.2 cents less than the previous week, and almost ten cents less than February 16, when it had reached a peak since the start of the year. The price of a liter continues to plummet, after three consecutive weeks of decline. It had not fallen this low since mid-January.

Gasoline still far from its annual low

After hitting a yearly high in April, the SP95-E10 price is also falling, although this drop is much less pronounced. It cost 1.9009 euros per liter on average last Friday, or 0.4 cents cheaper than the previous week. A price still far from the prices charged at the beginning of the year, when a liter of SP95-E10 was purchased for 1.7645 euros.

The gap between the prices of gasoline and diesel continues to widen, while the price of a liter was similar three months ago. This difference is explained in particular by seasonal phenomena, according to La Dépêche. As diesel is used for oil heating, demand is greater in winter – and therefore prices increase, before falling in spring. However, global demand for gasoline increases at this time of year, which corresponds to the “driving season” in the United States. More Americans are going away on weekends, and this peak in consumption, in a country where the majority of vehicles run on unleaded fuel, is pushing prices up.
