The Belgian Queen Elizabeth Competition, considered the world’s most prestigious music competition, opened on the 6th this year with the violin category. Of the 69 finalists, 7 are Korean, and most of them have won top prizes at famous domestic and international competitions or are actively performing, raising expectations of becoming the second winner in this category, following violinist Lim Ji-young in 2015. The final final results will be announced around 12:00 PM local time on June 1 (the morning of the 2nd in Korean time). The number of finalists by country is 13 from the United States, 9 from China, 7 from Korea, and 6 each from Japan and France.
Among the Korean finalists, Choi Song-ha (24) is the younger brother of her older sister Choi Ha-young (26), winner of the 2022 cello category of this competition, so it is expected that the sisters, two years apart, may win the prize. She is a student at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin and won the Grand Prize in Strings at the Berlin International Competition in 2018, and Second Place and Audience Prize at the Montreal International Competition last year. In February of this year, she performed Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 with the KBS Symphony Orchestra at the Mapo Cultural Foundation’s New Year’s Concert in Seoul.
Eunchae Kim (27, Hanns Eisler School of Music) stands out by taking first place at the prestigious Carl Plessy International Violin Competition in 2023, following third place at the 2022 Carl Nielsen International Competition. Haram Kim (26, Curtis Institute of Music) placed 3rd at the Harbin Competition and 6th at the Paganini Competition last year. Esther Yang (24, Juilliard School of Music) took third place at the Izai Competition last year. Oh Hae-rim (25, Curtis Institute of Music) won the 2022 New England Conservatory Concerto Competition. Da-yoon Yoo (23, Hanns Eisler School of Music), known as a member of the string quartet ‘Arete Quartet’, took second place in the Long Thibaut Crespin Competition last year. Ana Lim (27, Royal Academy of Music, London) won the Ars Classica Competition and the Michael Hill Competition this year.
There are 16 judges this year, and the Koreans include violinist Kang Dong-seok (artistic director of the Seoul Spring Festival) and Lee Kyung-seon (professor at Indiana University School of Music). Kang Dong-seok won third place at the Queen Elizabeth Competition in 1976, becoming the first Korean to win this competition, and participated as a judge in 2015 and 2019. Kyung-seon Lee reached the finals of this competition in 1993. Kang Dong-seok served as the head judge of the Seoul International Music Competition with LG in 2009 and 2018, and Lee Gyeong-seon served as a judge of the same competition in 2015.
In this year’s competition, 24 contestants who passed the finals held from the 6th to the 11th will advance to the semifinals (13th to 18th), and the final 12 contestants will perform in the finals with the Belgian National Orchestra at the Beaux-Arts Center from May 27th to June 1st.
