Last year, 10 out of 11 national university hospitals were operating at a loss, and the management difficulties are expected to worsen this year due to the medical vacuum caused by the departure of medical residents.

Kyungpook National University Hospital was found to have suffered the largest medical profit deficit ever last year.

Investment in facilities in preparation for the COVID-19 pandemic is cited as the cause, but there are concerns within and outside the medical community that the deficit may increase further in the future due to the departure of residents who oppose this year’s medical school admission quota.

According to the 2023 management performance of national university hospitals posted on the public institution management information system ‘Alio’ on the 7th, 10 of the 11 national university hospitals nationwide, including Kyungpook National University Hospital, recorded a deficit in medical profits. Seoul National University Bundang Hospital is the only hospital that has made a profit.

The hospital that incurred the biggest loss last year was Chungnam National University Hospital. This hospital had a deficit of 93.7 billion won last year. Although it decreased by 10.7 billion won from 104.4 billion won in 2022, the deficit was still the largest among national hospitals.

Next, △ Seoul National University Hospital – KRW 91.6 billion △ Pusan National University Hospital – KRW 68.5 billion △ Kyungpook National University Hospital – KRW 59 billion △ Jeju National University Hospital – KRW 36.5 billion △ Gyeongsang National University Hospital – KRW 33.2 billion △ Chonnam National University Hospital – KRW 29.9 billion △ Chonbuk National University Hospital – KRW 22.6 billion △ Kangwon National University Hospital – KRW 21.2 billion △Chungbuk National University Hospital – 15 billion won.

Kyungpook National University Hospital had the largest medical profit deficit (-36.8 billion won) among national university hospitals in 2015, but has reduced the deficit through management improvements from 2016 to 2019.

However, as the COVID-19 incident continued, the deficit expanded again to -KRW 50.9 billion in medical profits in 2020, -KRW 52.9 billion in 2021, -KRW 45.4 billion in 2022, and recorded the largest deficit in hospital history last year.

With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, the decrease in compensation for losses provided by the government to medical institutions responding to COVID-19 is also cited as a reason for the shift to deficit.

There are also concerns that the deficit at tertiary general hospitals, including national university hospitals, may increase further due to the conflict between the government and the government triggered by the government’s policy to increase the number of medical school students.

In fact, as the medical gap has lengthened, it has been reported that the management difficulties have worsened to the point where Kyung Hee Medical Center, a tertiary general hospital affiliated with Kyung Hee University Hospital, is at the crossroads of survival.

As Kyung Hee Medical Center’s deficit grew and management became difficult, it was reported that it was considering voluntary retirement as well as budget reductions such as the return of job allowances.

Meanwhile, there were rumors that some university hospitals in Daegu were experiencing financial difficulties to the point where they were unable to pay on-call fees to adjunct professors, but it was confirmed that this was not true.
