Former US President Donald Trump told Lando Norris he was his mascot after the British driver’s first Formula 1 win at the Miami Grand Prix.
In his 110th start, Norris finally scored a Formula 1 success. The 24-year-old changed his travel plans to stay in Miami for an extra night to celebrate becoming the 21st British Formula 1 driver. who enters the list of champions in sports.
Norris’ triumph came three and a half hours after former US President Trump toured the car with McLaren CEO Zach Brown, BTA writes.
“I didn’t see him in the garage before the race because I was busy preparing, but he came and saw me afterwards to congratulate me. He said he was my mascot because it was my first win, but I don’t know if he will come to more racing,” Norris said.
“Donald is someone you have to respect for a lot of reasons and it was an honor for him to come up to me and take the time out of his life to congratulate me on what I’ve done. It was a cool moment,” added the driver.
Norris had begun to lose his reputation after no victory had been achieved. A fan picked on him in Australia in March after the Briton became the first driver in the sport’s history to reach the podium 14 times without being champion.
“When are you going to win a race Lando?” shouted the supporter. Norris gave him an obscene gesture, and the moment was shared all over social media.
“I’ve never lost faith that I can make it to the top. On Instagram, I like all the comments from people who insult me. I like it. More than anything, it makes me smile, especially “Lando No-wins. So to prove those people wrong and to prove to the people who didn’t believe I could do it and then to get out on the track and do it puts an even bigger smile on my face. Thanks to all of them,” he added.
“I said at the beginning of the year that we could win a race and a lot of people doubted that,” added Norris, who will compete in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix at Imola on May 19.
