This visit, which is part of parallel diplomacy and the consolidation of relations uniting Morocco and Peru, was an opportunity to learn about the main structuring projects in the region of Dakhla-Oued Eddahab and the momentum of development and progress that this region is experiencing at all levels.
In a statement to the press, the governor of Piura (Peru), Luis Neyra León, stressed that the objective of this visit is to learn closely about the various projects and reforms launched in Dakhla and to establish twinning with this region, based on the fact that it is full of diverse potential and assets.
For his part, the parliamentarian and member of the Congress of the Republic of Peru, Eduardo Castillo Rivas, emphasized the importance of this twinning which would allow the regions of Dakhla and Piura to “strengthen their links in the areas of agriculture, commerce, education and culture.
Noting the relevance of the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, Mr. Castillo Rivas indicated that “it is a project that we support within the framework of the Peru-Morocco Parliamentary Friendship Group, with a view to reaching a solution to the dispute over the Sahara.
For his part, the President of the Council of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region, El Khattat Yanja, noted that Dakhla has experienced notable development in all areas, through the implementation of the region’s integrated development program, inspired by of the New Development Model of the Southern Provinces which encompasses all socio-economic, cultural and environmental sectors.
This development momentum, he continued, demonstrates the concern of public authorities at central and local levels to strengthen the attractiveness of the region, with a view to establishing it as an attractive pole for national investment and stranger.
The completion of structuring projects such as the Dakhla Atlantique port, backed by an industrial and logistics zone, should stimulate the various productive sectors and consolidate the position of the region, as a logistics hub and gateway to the countries of the Sahel and West Africa, which represents an opportunity for European and Latin American countries.
Furthermore, Mr. Yanja noted that the Atlantic Initiative launched by HM King Mohammed VI to promote access of the Sahel States to the Atlantic Ocean constitutes a unique opportunity to unify the efforts of the countries of the region, establish a sustainable development and guarantee multidimensional African cooperation which establishes the emergence of a new Africa, prosperous and stable.
Earlier in the day, members of the Peruvian delegation followed a presentation presented by the director of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab Regional Investment Center, Mounir Houari, in which he focused on major projects in the region, citing in this regard the Dakhla Atlantique port, the distribution and trade zones in Bir Gandouz and El Guerguarat and the West Africa Free Zone backed by the port, as well as the seawater desalination project to irrigate 5,000 Ha of agricultural land.
On this occasion, a twinning agreement was signed between the Council of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region and the regional government of Piura, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation relations in many areas of common interest.
During their stay, the members of the delegation visited the Dakhla media library, the port of Dakhla and an industrial unit for the development of small pelagics.
