In the Santa Clara market, a pound of cod is between USD 6.50 and USD 7. They sell it wrapped in plastic bags, so the price varies depending on the weight.
The Megamaxi chain offers it in packages of different sizes and brands. A package of approximately 500 grams (just over a pound) is about USD 11 and 900 grams is about USD 17.
The supermarket also offers dried and salted fillets of other types of fish. 450 grams sell for around USD 8.
And the grains?
According to tradition, fanesca is made up of 12 grains, although it is possible to prepare it with less. Among the essential ones are beans, peas, lentils, chickpeas, broad beans, lupine and corn.
Other basic ingredients of this thick soup are pumpkin, sambo and onion. Some also call it melloco. Stores in the Santa Clara market sell the different grains and melloco in small bags of around 14 ounces (0.87 pounds) for USD 1, and a one-pound bag for USD 1.50.

Prices start to rise

Hornados Aidita, a store in this market, offers it for USD 5, including the fig and cheese dessert. But on Good Friday, the dish will also include molo and empanadas, so the price will rise to USD 8. Aida Granda, owner of the establishment, says that the ingredients to prepare a pot of fanesca cost her between USD 25 and 30. That pot It’s enough for about 20 dishes.
