Obesity is one of the chronic diseases that has increased the most during the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19). One in two Korean adult men is obese.

According to the ‘2022 National Health and Nutrition Survey’ announced by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency in December last year, the obesity rate among adult men in 2022 was 47.7%. Compared to 2018 (42.8%) before the spread of COVID-19, it increased by nearly 5 percentage points. In particular, the majority of men in their 30s and 40s, 55.7% and 53.6%, respectively, were found to be obese. During the COVID-19 period, as outdoor activities decreased and work shifted to working from home, the number of obese people increased to the extent that the term ‘obese people’ emerged.

It is not only adults who have seen an increase in obesity during the COVID-19 outbreak. According to the Korea Health Promotion and Development Institute, the obesity rate in children and adolescents increased from 14.4% in 2018 to 18.7% in 2022. In particular, for male students, the obesity rate increased by more than 5 percentage points from 16.4% to 21.6%.

Medical experts point out that we need to change our lifestyle habits now because obesity causes high blood pressure, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. In addition, although interest in obesity treatment drugs such as Wigobi is increasing, they all agreed that we should not rely excessively on drugs alone.

Oh Sang-woo, a professor of family medicine at Dongguk University Ilsan Hospital, pointed out that the low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet, which has been popular for several years, is prone to side effects such as decreased muscle mass and lower basal metabolic rate. In the short term, you may lose weight, but in the long term, even if you loosen your diet control even a little, you can end up gaining weight ‘easily.’ Professor Oh emphasized, “In the end, exercising consistently while consuming a balanced diet of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats is the only diet method that can be maintained for a long time while preventing muscle loss.” He also recommended eating carbohydrates mainly from whole grains and mixed grains that are absorbed slowly, and slowly chewing whole fruits without juicing or grinding them.

Kang Jae-heon, a professor of family medicine at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, said, “Pharmacological therapy is only used when diet control and exercise alone do not work,” and added, “In particular, you should never take medicine that was not prescribed to you.” The idea is that you should not rely excessively on diet supplements or health functional foods. Additionally, you should refrain from taking more than the prescribed dose or taking more than two medications at the same time. In some cases, it can lead to serious side effects such as cardiovascular disease or depression.
