Warp drives are a well-known element of science fiction. These hypothetical engines could manipulate the fabric of spacetime, compressing it in front of the spacecraft and expanding it behind it. This process creates a kind of warp bubble, which allows the spacecraft to travel at the speed of light or even faster.
30 years ago, physicist Miguel Alcubierre published a paper in which he described the concept of a true warp drive. However, for the operation of such an installation, negative energy was required, which is an exotic substance that does not have clear experimental confirmation.
It also suggested the use of dark energy, a mysterious force that appears to be causing the accelerated expansion of the universe. The authors of the new study suggest that a true warp drive does not require exotic negative energy.
They say the research redefines the idea of warp drives because they have created a first-of-its-kind model of such a device, demonstrating that the devices are not completely relegated to science fiction. Their model “uses a complex mixture of traditional and new gravitational techniques to form a warp bubble capable of moving objects at high speeds without breaking the bounds of known physics.”
Scientists have demonstrated in their model that their warp drive is not capable of achieving speeds exceeding the speed of light, but it can approach this speed (300 thousand km/s).
Even with other scientists confirming that the new study’s math is correct, humans are still a long way from being able to develop a true warp drive.
