The Xalapa Regional Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF) canceled the candidacy for the Senate for Campeche of Eliseo Fernández Montúfarbecause he is ineligible due to having current arrest warrants.

The former gubernatorial candidate had already been eliminated from the race because his party, Citizen movementfailed to comply with gender parity, but the Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal determined to return the registration.
Fernández Montufar can still challenge the cancellation of his registration before said Superior Chamber, which is the last instance of decision in electoral matters.
During this Monday’s session, the judges of the Xalapa Chamber unanimously decided to revoke the candidacy for the Senate of the Republic of the first formula, in the face of a challenge from Morena.

“The Plenary determined that Morena is right, since the candidate is ineligible for being removed from the action of justice to avoid being subject to criminal proceedings, due to the issuance of the arrest warrant,” indicated the Xalapa Chamber.
In April 2022, the Third Criminal Court of the First Judicial District of Campeche issued an arrest warrant against Eliseo Fernández for alleged embezzlement, operations with resources of illicit origin, tax fraud and criminal association, for the alleged diversion of resources when mayor from Campeche.
Interpol issued a Red Card against the former gubernatorial candidate for that arrest warrant.
In September 2023, Eliseo Fernández himself published a video in which he reported that he had another arrest warrant for his alleged involvement in the murder of Sergio Novelo, who was his collaborator in the Campeche mayor’s office.
“I already have an arrest warrant for qualified murder in the case of Sergio Novelo,” he indicated.
Samuel Cortés Gutiérrez, who pleaded guilty to the material murder of Sergio Novelo, former comptroller of the Campeche mayor’s office, pointed out that Eligio Carrasco, whose “patron” was Eliseo Fernández Montufar, former candidate for governor of that entity, paid him to kill him.
In a video, from the hearing before the Judiciary of Campeche that is dated September 7, 2022, the accused confirms that Eligio Carrasco paid him to murder Novelo on the orders of Eliseo Fernández.
