Agricultural campaign: The volume of rainfall reached 77 mm, down 44% (Mr. Sadiki)
Rabat – The volume of rainfall during the current agricultural season reached 77 millimeters, a drop of 54% compared to the average of the last 40 years and 44% compared to the same period of the previous year, indicated , Monday in Rabat, the Minister of Agriculture, Maritime Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Mohamed Sadiki.
In response to a question during the oral question session in the House of Representatives on “the effects of the scarcity of rains on the agricultural season and the rural world”, Mr. Sadiki explained that water resources reached today 600 million cubic meters (m3), a decline of 83% compared to the average.
Morocco “has been experiencing an exceptional and severe climatic situation for six years,” he said, highlighting the increase in the frequency of droughts, noting that from 2018, six consecutive dry years have been recorded with a decline unprecedented level of water resources, reservoirs and groundwater.
Mr. Sadiki thus noted a drop in the average water resources of dams from 18 billion m3 during the period 1945 – 1980 to 14 billion m3 after 1980 and to less than 5 billion m3 over the last five years.
Regarding large irrigation areas, Mr. Sadiki indicated that agricultural areas currently do not exceed 400,000 hectares out of a total of 750,000 hectares, a drop of 44%, explaining that this situation has had an impact on the water allocation allocated to large irrigated areas.
