Commenting on this move by the Government, G. Nausėda stated that when “he himself is not in danger, he can regulate the living conditions of others”, referring to his competitor in the presidential elections, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.

“Well, you know, the Government approved and accepted it, didn’t it? When you are not in danger yourself, you can regulate the living conditions of others”, said G. Nausėda.

The head of state continued his answer with further irony. He suggested establishing an area from which presidents could not leave at all.

“By the way, I would say that maybe in general the president should be set up an enclosure from which he cannot leave. For example, around Turniške – two kilometers in one direction or the other. He could mushroom, but he couldn’t leave. That’s how I appreciate it,” said G. Nausėda.

“It is possible to put it on after a while,” the president added.

The entry into force of the draft law is scheduled for when the new head of state and prime minister are appointed after the 2024 presidential and Seimas elections.

However, in its conclusion, the Government draws attention to the fact that in 2024 the law on the approval of the financial indicators of the state budget and municipal budgets does not provide for the funds that should be allocated to the adaptation of the premises of the president’s residence for the needs of the head of the country.

It is noted that the issue of allocating additional funds for the repair of the residence premises could be examined in accordance with the procedure established by legal acts when drawing up the 2025 state budget.

ELTA reminds that, after submission, the Seimas has approved M. Maldeikis’ proposal to legally oblige the President and Prime Minister of Lithuania to live in the residences assigned to them in Turniškės.

The entry into force of the draft law is scheduled for when the new head of state and prime minister are appointed after the 2024 presidential and Seimas elections.

In early 2021, Prime Minister I. Šimonytė moved to the residence designated for the Prime Minister in Turiniškės, but the current President G. Nausėda refused to do so.

According to the presidency, such a decision was made, taking into account the conclusions of the experts who analyzed the condition of the Turniški residence and prepared possible scenarios for its renovation.

Currently, the Chancellery of the Presidency manages three buildings in Turniškės under the right of trust and land plots on the basis of use.

The main building of the president’s residence was built in 1940.

After the restoration of Lithuania’s independence and the reconstruction of the building, presidents Valdas Adamkus and Rolandas Paksas lived in the residence, later – president Dalia Grybauskaitė.
