Humidifier disinfectant ingredients were detected in slime (so-called ‘liquid monster’) sold on Chinese overseas direct purchase sites Ali Express (Ali) and Temu.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 9th that as a result of testing 9 children’s toys and school supplies, including slime, pencil cases, and mechanical pencils sold by Ali, Temu, etc., hazardous substances were detected in 5 products.
After establishing measures to ensure consumer safety on overseas online platforms last month, Seoul City has been disclosing safety test results for children’s products every week.
In one out of two slimes used as children’s toys due to their soft texture, chloromethylisothiazolinone (CMIT) and methylisothiazolinone (MIT), which are ingredients of humidifier disinfectants and are prohibited from being used in children’s products, were detected.
Another slime contained up to 10 times the standard level of boron, which causes problems in the reproductive system, and phthalate plasticizers (DEHP, DBP, DIBP) were found in decorations (accessories) exceeding the standard level by 213 times. The product was judged inadequate in physical and mechanical tests. Small parts of the product have been found to pose a risk of swallowing or choking in children under 36 months.
Dietetic hexyl phthalate (DEHP), a phthalate-based plasticizer, was detected in children’s pencil cases at up to 146 times the standard level. In children’s mechanical pencils, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a phthalate-based plasticizer, was detected at 11 times the standard level, and the metal tip contained an excess of lead, which was 1.6 times the standard level. Diisononyl phthalate (DINP), a phthalate-based plasticizer, was detected in figure products that not only children but also adults use as a hobby, exceeding the standard by three times.
Phthalate plasticizers are endocrine disruptors that affect reproductive functions such as reduced sperm count and infertility. Dietic hexyl phthalate is a possible human carcinogen (Class 2B) designated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, and lead harms reproductive function and increases the risk of cancer if exposed above safety standards.
