(ANSA) – AMSTERDAM, 09 MAY – Dutch riot police clashed yesterday with pro-Palestinian demonstrators, as officers entered to remove barricades at the University of Amsterdam, the scene of unrest since Monday. Police said late in the evening that they had arrested 32 people for “violence, destruction and assault” at the university and on a major thoroughfare in the center of the capital. Local television images showed dozens of police in riot gear exchanging blows with a group of protesters as officers cleared an area in front of the Binnengasthuis building in central Amsterdam. Police said protesters then blocked a major local road called Rokin where more violence erupted, adding that protesters “threw ammonia at riot police.” Students are calling for the University of Amsterdam (UVA) to sever ties with Israel over the war in the Gaza Strip, inspired by ongoing demonstrations on US campuses. Just before midnight Amsterdam police said on X that the situation was “calm” and that most protesters had left the area. They had previously said the eviction “was authorized by the mayor” after UVA made charges including disturbing the peace and destroying property. (HANDLE).
