Turkey, most likely, will not return to the implementation of the program to create a new generation fighter F-35, and therefore calls on the United States to reconsider the sanctions imposed on Ankara under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
As Day.Az reports with reference to TASS, this was announced by the Chairman of the International Affairs Commission of the Turkish Parliament, Fuat Oktay.
“Turkey shows no interest in returning to the F-35 program, so the CAATSA sanctions imposed against Ankara in connection with the acquisition of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia should be re-discussed and canceled. Even then (at the time of the purchase of the systems – TASS note) they said that the S-400 and F-35 cases should not be confused,” TRT TV quoted the legislator as saying. At the head of the parliamentary delegation, the former Vice President of Turkey (2018-2023) held negotiations in the US Congress.
The republic expressed a similar position at negotiations with the delegation of the US Congress at the end of March in Ankara.
Turkey was dropped from the F-35 development program in 2019 after acquiring the S-400 from Russia. The Republic produced some of the components, fuselage elements and some systems for these fighters. The United States stated that Turkey’s return to the program’s participants is possible only if it abandons the S-400.
