Last year, Diego Matamoros, son of Kiko Matamoros, was diagnosed with degenerative spondylolisthesis, a chronic and congenital disease that causes severe bone pain.

Now, the influencer wanted to share with his followers his last visit to the hospital by publishing some photographs on his Instagram where he appears lying on the stretcher while a professional gives him an injection in his back.

What is spondylolisthesis and what causes it?

As explained by BUnited States National Library of MedicineSpondylolisthesis is a condition in which a bone (vertebra) in the spine moves forward out of its proper position on the bone beneath it. The degenerative form is the most common form, and in young people it may be due to a congenital anomaly.

In older people, it can appear as a result of abnormal wear of cartilage and bones (for example, in people with arthritis), and it is more common in women than in men. Likewise, there are certain types of sports activities that increase the risk.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms of spondylolisthesis vary depending on the severity of the condition, and it is even possible that there are people who do not show signs of the disease.

In those who do develop symptomatic symptoms, these include lower back pain, muscle tension, pain in the thighs and buttocks, stiffness, sensitivity in the affected area and weakness in the legs.

Typically, the condition is diagnosed through a combination of a physical examination and a spinal x-ray. Additionally, other imaging tests, such as CT or MRI, can be used to identify associated problems such as spinal canal narrowing or nerve compression.

How is it treated?

Treatment depends on the severity of each case. In most patients, simply performing certain exercises can help strengthen and stretch the lumbar muscles.

In more severe instances, measures such as wearing a corset to limit spinal movement, taking oral pain medications (either orally or injected), or physical therapy may be recommended.

Finally, some patients may need surgery to fuse the vertebrae, especially when their pain does not improve with other treatments, weakness appears in the legs, or there is difficulty controlling the bladder or bowels.
