A man killed his entire family, numbering 12 people, with a rifle in the city of Basra in southern Iraq, and then committed suicide.
The crime sparked widespread interaction, and activists circulated on social media. A video clip was spread showing the bodies of the victims soaked in blood.
The Iraqi Ministry of Interior followed up with a statement in which it said, through the spokesman of the Interior and the Security Media Cell, Brigadier General Miqdad Miri, in which it said: “In an unfortunate criminal incident, at 2130 on Wednesday, a father killed his entire family, consisting of 12 members, with a rifle and then committed suicide.”
The spokesman explained that the incident occurred in the area of “employees’ homes in the Shatt al-Arab district in Basra Governorate,” pointing out that “preliminary information indicates that this incident was the result of financial matters.”
The security spokesman added: “For its part, the Basra Governorate Police Command came to the scene of the accident and opened an extensive investigation…” Additional details will be provided at a later time.
On the other hand, the father’s relatives confirmed in interviews with local media that he was not suffering from any financial hardship, pointing out that he had high morals and was religiously committed.
They added that they are not convinced that he committed the crime, that he has property and homes and that he is financially capable, and that among the dead are his brothers, aged between 18 and 20 years.
