A special retirement ceremony for a detection dog who has been searching for explosives at an American airport for five years has been revealed, creating a heartwarming experience.

According to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on the 9th (local time), a retirement ceremony was held for TSA’s explosive detection dog ‘Rex’ at Mitchell International Airport on the 2nd.

Rex, who works with trainer Regina Eisenberg, started working as a detection dog at the age of one. He worked at Chicago O’Hare International Airport for the first three years, and then became the first detection dog at Mitchell Airport, where he remained for five years.

Eisenberg and other airport employees organized a surprise retirement ceremony to recognize Rex’s hard work. They held a ‘ball shower’ event using Rex’s favorite tennis balls.

In the video released on social networking service (SNS), Rex carried out his mission by sniffing the carrier as usual.

Then, suddenly, dozens of bright yellow tennis balls rained down on him, and Rex looked embarrassed. But he immediately got excited and ran around with the ball in his mouth. People standing around also cheered and threw tennis balls and toy balls.

After a special retirement ceremony, Rex took off the ‘Do Not Pet’ sign that explosive detection dogs put on and returned to being an ordinary dog.

Additionally, Rex was adopted by Eisenberg and plans to spend the rest of his life as a pet dog. “He was my first dog as a trainer, and he will be my last dog,” Eisenberg said.

“Rex is looking forward to taking a nap on the couch, playing on the beach, and enjoying his favorite toys after retirement,” TSA said.
