EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell believes it is logical that countries that have been waiting for many years to join the European Union should join the community before Ukraine, Day.Az reports.
“There’s a line [из претендентов на вступление], said the head of EU diplomacy at a conference in Madrid. We must make this expansion real, but for Ukraine to join the EU. Logically, some of those who have been waiting for many years should enter it first.”
“Ukraine is such a big country that if it became a member of the EU tomorrow, it would be the only country receiving funds. All other countries would make a net contribution,” Borrell added.
The leaders of the EU countries, at a meeting in Brussels on December 14-15, 2023, decided to begin negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on admission to the community. However, the European Commission had to first select the “right moment” to actually launch negotiations, prepare a framework for them and present it to the EU Council. Negotiations should begin no earlier than the fall.
