The Colombian Geological Service has maintained constant surveillance over the Puracé Volcano, located in the department of Cauca, due to worrying seismic activity that suggests the possibility of an imminent eruption. The region is currently on orange alert, with special attention to the seismic movements recorded under the crater and the eastern flank of the volcano.

Although a decrease in earthquakes related to the movement of magma beneath the eruptive centers of Piocollo and Curiquinga has been observed, experts warn that current conditions still do not allow us to rule out greater risks. In addition, adverse weather conditions have made it difficult to detect gaseous emissions, a key indicator to evaluate the state of the volcano.
As explained by experts from the Colombian Geological Service, although the volcano remains on orange alert at present, the possibility of raising the alert to red in the coming days has not been ruled out. This could have a significant impact on more than 20 municipalities in the departments of Cauca, Nariño and Huila.

«To return to a state of minor alert (Yellow) a reasonable time is required in which all the monitored parameters are evaluated and trends that may indicate greater stability are determined. During this time, in the event that there is an acceleration of processes that suggest an imminent eruption or that the eruption itself occurs, the alert status level will be changed to Red,” the entity explained.
